1. Whispering Rose Crochet Summer Top Pattern
Combining openwork stitches with the practicality of a short-sleeved garment, my summer top free crochet pattern is a versatile piece that will become a staple in your summer wardrobe.
I worked two long rectangles sideways and once the seams are sewn, the alignment of the pattern changes to vertical.
This is an easy project suitable for beginners.
- Recommended yarn: Lion Brand Superwash Merino (use any DK yarn but make sure you match the gauge)
- Sizes: XS to 5X
This pattern is available to purchase on Etsy.
2. Easy Crochet Summer Top
If you can chain and work double crochet (US single crochet) and treble crochet (US double crochet) stitches you’ll be able to follow my pattern.
There’s no increase/decrease as there is no shaping needed. You don’t have too many ends to sew in either (takes me ages to sew my ends in!).
- Recommended Yarn: Cotton DK (250g)
- Size: made to measure
Need something to wear out on your day trip? You’ll be able to crochet this top in a few hours.
3. Crochet Tank Top Pattern
I’ve used the V-Stitch and UK treble / US double crochet stitches in this pattern.
I’ve designed two lengths. You can choose waist length or if you prefer your tops longer (like me!) you can add a lacy hem.
- Recommended Yarn: King Cole Caribbean Calypso DK in Antigua 100g/306 yards/280 metres – Size XS/S/M/L 300g, Size XL/2/3XL 400g, Size 4/5XL 500g
- Sizes: XS/S, M, L, XL, 2/3XL, 4/5XL
If you’re a beginner comfortable with basic crochet stitches and want to learn how to decrease, this is the ideal project.
4. Elise Tank Top
Worked in the block stitch, my easy summer pattern offers flexibility in length. Whether you prefer a crop top, standard length, tunic or dress, you’ll find it easy to customize to your desired fit (even if you’re a beginner, you’ll be able to make the adjustments).
You also have options on whether to add ruffles around the armhole or leave plain.
- Recommended yarn: King Cole Cottonsoft DK
- Sizes: S to 3X
Free to view on the blog you can also upgrade to a PDF in my Etsy and Ravelry stores.
5. Maisie Poncho Top
Use your leftover yarn in a creative and beautiful way reducing waste with my poncho top.
Worked in one piece (the same construction as my Cotton Candy poncho) in a lacy four-row pattern repeat, this project is much easier than it looks!
The free poncho top pattern uses five different colours giving you options for colours from your stash. Or maybe you have enough to work in one colour. Whichever you choose, you’ll love how comfortable and stylish it is.
6. Beginner Crochet Crop Top Pattern
Using only half double crochets and working in the back loop, this easy crochet crop top pattern works up quickly.
I love how easy it is to customise to fit any size or body type. To create more length, you simply need to add chains to your foundation chain or for a less figure-hugging fit, add more rows until you have positive ease. You can also decrease your chains to make a crochet bralette / bikini style top or you can remove rows so your top is form fitting.
Follow the crop top video tutorial if you need guidance.
If you can crochet a rectangle, you can make this top.
- Recommended Yarn: Drops Merino Extra Fine – DK/Light (3), 105m/50g, 155yds/1.8 oz, 100% Merino, Ice Blue (39) approx. 110(135, 165, 210, 250, 300, 350)g

The band uses a pretty shell stitch that looks fab.
A size chart is included to help you figure out your band size and the instructions for the cup explain how you can create a bra cup that will fit perfectly for your body.
There’s also a video tutorial you can follow along with.

What type of yarn is best for crochet tops?
There are 4 types of yarn that I think work best for crochet summer tops:
- Cotton
Soft and lightweight, cotton lets body heat escape – the perfect choice for wearing when it’s warmer.
- Merino
Merino is silky and keeps it shape but most of all, it has its own built in climate control.
The air pockets in the fibre not only keep you warm when it’s cold outside, merino wool also keeps you cool when the weather is hot.
- Bamboo
Bamboo absorbs moisture so you won’t feel sweaty even when you’re hot!
- Mixed Blends
There are other fibres that make great lightweight crochet tops too, such as the premium acrylic and polyamide mix in King Cole’s Caribbean Calypso UK.
I loved working with this yarn in this pattern for a summer top. The yarn slid so smoothly on my hook and the drape is fabulous. Another important factor is it feels great next to my skin.
Other yarns that work well for crochet tops
Thinner fibre yarns that produce a lightweight fabric are ideal too such as 2 ply or sport weight.
This is the ideal opportunity for you to try out premium yarns. Depending on size, you’ll need between 300 – 500g. Treat yourself (but only if it’s in your budget!).
Yarn tip: If the yarn recommended for a pattern is no longer available, just type in the name of the yarn on Yarnsub to find a substitution. You can also search by fibre content, gauge and more.
What is the best crochet stitch for a top?
Open, lacy crochet patterns are ideal for summer because they let the air flow through.
A denser pattern can work too though.
If you see a top you would love to crochet (no matter the stitch pattern) go for it.
How to crochet a summer top
Have a go at designing your own crochet top!
An easy way to crochet a summer top is by crocheting two rectangles and sewing them together at the shoulders (leaving a neck opening) and sides (leaving space for armholes). There is no increasing or decreasing. This is how my easy crochet top is constructed.
