Easy Crochet Bucket Hat

This crochet bucket hat is an easier pattern than the bucket hat I designed last year.

In this pattern, I’ve used different stitches for the three sections (crown, side and brim) and there is a colour change in the crown but there’s no granny squares or sewing (apart from weaving in your ends!).

The written pattern is available in UK crochet terms and US Crochet Terms.

A great stash busting pattern (you only need 100g cotton Aran/Worsted), this easy bucket hat is crocheted in three easy steps:

  1. The top of the hat is crocheted in a circle with increases in each of the rounds.  This covers your crown.
  2. The sides continue with the same number of stitches to your forehead.  This gives your hat the bucket shape.
  3. The brim is crocheted in rounds with increases in the first round to give a slight ruffle.

Design Inspiration

I was inspired by a member of the craft group where I volunteer for this design.

I was gifted a handmade item and in return I asked if there was anything I could crochet.

She didn’t want a solid crown or the brim to be too wide and floppy in her bucket hat.  She also wanted it to be crocheted in grey.

I couldn’t resist adding a bit of colour – luckily, she really liked the finished bucket hat!

How the pattern is worked

This crochet bucket hat is worked from the crown down, ending at the brim.

The crown is worked in a larger hook in UK treble crochet (tr) / US double crochet (dc).  This gives a less dense fabric.

8 rounds of increases in alternating pink and grey complete the crown.

The side is worked in a smaller hook in UK double crochet  / US single crochet.  This gives a dense fabric and gives form to the shape.

11 rounds in grey complete the side.

The brim is worked in alternating rounds of UK half treble /  US half double and UK crossed half treble / US crossed half double.  These stitches add interest as well as working well to shade eyes.

The first round of the brim is an increase round in back loop only (blo).

Five rounds in grey complete the brim.

Yarn

I used 2 x 50g Paintbox Cotton Aran in Slate Grey from my stash (plus a small amount of lipstick pink).

This yarn is perfect for accessories and washes well at 40 degrees.

  • 50g = (1.8oz)
  • Blend 100% Cotton
  • Care Machine Wash 40°C; Warm Iron, Do Not Bleach, Do Not Tumble Dry
  • Yarn Length 85m (93yds)
  • Yarn Weight Aran

Pattern Notes

  • 5mm crochet hook is used for the crown
  • 4mm crochet hook is used for the side and brim
  • Chain 1 does not count as a stitch
  • Chain 2 counts as a stitch
  • Chain 3 counts as a stitch
  • Yarn A = Grey  /  Yarn B = Pink
  • Colour changes take place on the last pull through of the stitch before the colours change
  • Do not fasten off after each round when crocheting the crown – float the yarn up the inside, making sure the tension does not bunch the rows up
  • When you need to repeat more than one set of stitches, this is denoted with brackets  [  ]  ie: [1 htr blo in next st, 2 htr blo in next st] 3 times = repeat the instructions 3 times
  • All rounds are joined with a slip stitch to the top of the chain that started the round
  • Stitch counts in ( ) at end of round
