Combining openwork stitches with the practicality of a short-sleeved garment, my summer top crochet pattern is a versatile piece that will become a staple in your summer wardrobe.
The open spaces create an airy and breathable fabric, allowing you to enjoy the warm days with comfort. I’ve used merino wool and yes, it’s just as good to wear in the summer! The yarn is great for regulating temperature – when it’s hot, the fibers absorb your body’s moisture vapors and evaporate them outside of the fabric – keeping you nice and cool.

If you’re an experienced crocheter looking for a new project or a beginner eager to learn and expand your skills, this pattern offers a rewarding project.

It’s easy to change the length. Crop top? Check the length you want and amend the foundation chain, making sure your chains are divisible by 2 and 3. You will need to add 2 to this total and don’t forget to add 3 for your turning chain.

You can make this lacy top unique by choosing your favorite yarn colour and exploring different yarn fibre options (as long as you match the gauge, you can use any yarn you want). This design can be a reflection of your personal style!

Why you’ll love crocheting this lacy summer top
Design Inspiration
I wanted to personalize my wardrobe with a crochet summer top that was airy and lightweight. The garment needed to have open stitches (to be comfortable in the heat!) and look elegant. I also wanted to have the choice of wearing the top over a cami with shorts or as a cover up for the beach. And this design fits those needs perfectly. If you’re looking for something similar, this is perfect for you too!
I’ve designed this easy crochet summer top pattern to fit sizes XS to 5X.

I’ve included step-by-step written instructions, photos, and clear stitch explanations.
The pattern is written in US Terminology.

How the summer top pattern is worked
Double crochet, single crochet and chains are used to create the lacy pattern (US terminology).
Worked in two long rectangles, seams are sewn front and back making the v-neck opening at the front. Side seams are also sewn together. This is the same construction as my Faith vest.
Crocheted from side to side (horizontal), when folded and seamed the pattern changes to a vertical alignment.

The two crocheted rectangles transform into a stunning openwork short sleeve top!

It’s an easy project that works up in no time.
This sample is in size L/XL.

Yarn
Lion Brand Superwash Merino is a luxurious yarn that is soft and comfortable next to your skin.
It has excellent stitch definition and I loved the stretch this yarn has.
A big bonus is how easy it is to care for. Machine wash your lacy top at 30 degrees then lay it flat to dry. Easy!
It’s available in 21 colors so there’s plenty to choose from!
This design is crocheted in the colourway Tutu.
