I had bought subscription boxes for books and stationery but been reluctant to try a yarn subscription box.
Would I like the yarn? Would I be wasting my money?
But then I read Lindsey’s post on Winding Road Crochet, Is A Yarn Subscription Box Right For You? and I decided to risk it.

My first yarn subscription box was with Knitcrate and for a couple of years it was amazing. I loved receiving hand-dyed and exclusive yarn each month!
Sadly, I had to pause my subscription because the new postage prices were out of my budget but now they are no longer in business.
Since then I’ve spent some time searching for crochet subscription boxes or even a knitting subscription box (I used to knit a long time before I crocheted).
I’ve come to love the excitement of having yarn delivered each month!
During my searching I’ve found it’s worth keeping an eye on Ebay as one off subscription boxes are often listed. See what is currently available on Ebay.
I’m excited to have found quite a few crochet subscription box UK and knitting subscription box UK. There are subscription boxes that deliver Internationally for extra shipping costs too.
All of the yarn subscriptions I’m sharing are unique and from small businesses.
How much do crochet and yarn subscription boxes cost?
Prices have quite a wide range depending on which option you choose. For example, a single skein of hand dyed yarn will be a lot cheaper than 5 skeins of yarn.
If you’re looking for yarn subscription UK, you will need to take into account if there are any shipping and handling costs so don’t forget to factor this into your budgeting.
What are the cheapest yarn subscription boxes?
The cheapest box subscription I have found is £4.80 for one mini skein.
What is in a yarn subscription box?
- Hand dyed yarn, often dyed exclusively for the monthly yarn club, with often a choice of fibres and weights
- Some include a pattern
- Some include extra goodies such as stitch markers, decals, or edible treats
Which yarn subscription is best for me?
To find the best for you, ask yourself:
- What is my preference – knitting subscription box UK or a crochet subscription box UK?
- What is in my budget for minimum and maximum spend?
- What type of fibre do I like working with the best?
- What weight of fibre is my favourite?
- Do I want to get out of my comfort zone and try a mystery yarn box?
- Do I need a pattern in the yarn box?
- Do I want to make toys, home accessories or clothing?
- Do I want extra goodies?
- Do I want a monthly yarn box or a one off?
Once you have your answers, you’re ready to start looking for your ideal yarn subscription box.

Knitcrate Review
Sadly, as at 12th December 2022 Knitcrate has closed. I’ve left my review here as it is part of my crocheting journey (where my yarn subscription began!) and you never know, there might be a Knitcrate subscription box in the future!
If you live in the US then I would still highly recommend Knitcrate’s yarn subscription box.
The yarns in this yarn subscription box are hand dyed specifically and available for a limited amount of time only. They’re only available to subscribers. These are yarns you wouldn’t otherwise get to work with.
If you love the yarn you receive and want to buy more, members get 25% off further skeins with access to exclusive Double Down™ sales and great discounts.
My first box contained DK weight yarn with the colourway Leaf Eater. The fibre mix of 85% Merino wool and 15% cashmere and just feels lovely to touch. Just look how lush it was!
I’ve recently used 200g of Knitologie by Knitcrate (worsted/aran weight and the fibre is made up 40% Merino, 30% Silk and 30% Alpaca) in Flying Trapeze in my free Crochet Dog Sweater Pattern. Such a treat to work with these limited edition yarns!
New patterns and techniques to try out
The printed booklet contains a crochet, knitting, sock pattern and diagrams (these can also be downloaded as PDF files).
Shop discounts and rewards for members
Known as stash points, there are different ways to build up your points which equate to different amounts.
An active and informative online community
You can engage as little or as much as you want to in Knitcrate’s online community. I have to confess I’m not really a ‘group’ type of person but I love how active and encouraging Knitcrate’s Ravely community is. Never say never!
If you’re thinking of trying out a yarn subscription box we hope you feel inspired by the fabulous indie businesses we found.
Happy crafting!
