How to Crochet the Chunky Stripes Throw :  Easy and Eye-Catching

I’m excited to share with you my latest beginner-friendly crochet blanket pattern!

Measuring approximately 40″ x 40″, I’ve designed this chunky stripes throw to be adaptable, allowing you to easily customize it to any size that suits your needs.  Instructions for changing sizes are in the free pattern below.

I’ve used three colours in the design—a main colour and two contrasting shades.  All three colours are used to work the Floret stitch, which adds a lovely “pop,” and the rows between the Floret stitches are worked in the main (neutral) colour in sturdy rows of double crochet. This creates a beautiful interplay of texture and colour.

To bring it all together, the border is crocheted using all three colours in half double crochet, giving the blanket a polished and cohesive finish.

Supplies and Materials

  • #5 weight yarn (chunky, bulky):  Main colour 894yds; Contrast Colour (1) 298yds; Contrast Colour (2) 298 yds
  • 6mm / J-10 Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

Yarn Choices

I chose Painbox Yarns Simply Chunky for this striped chunky blanket.  I haven’t used this weight of yarn from this brand before.  I know the different thicknesses in one ball of yarn have disappointed some customers but the 10 balls I used for this project were all the same thickness with no joins.  I was surprised at how soft the yarn actually feels and really liked the drape and weight of the blanket.

Here’s more information about Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky:

Net Weight: 100g (3.53oz)

Blend: 100% Acrylic

Crochet Hooks: 6.00mm (J)

Length: 136m (149yds)

Yarn Weight: Chunky

Care: Cool Iron, Do Not Bleach, Low Heat Tumble Dry, Machine Wash 30°C

Yarn Substitutions

These yarns have an excellent match with ply, gauge and fibre

Stylecraft Special Baby Chunky

Paintbox Yarns Chunky Pots

Cygnet Kiddies Supersoft Chunky

Hayfield Bonus Chunky

Crocheting your swatch in your yarn of choice will help you to see if you’re happy with the drape.

I recommend a neutral colour for the main colour and complimentary colours (or opposite) colours to work the floret row.  This makes the floret pop.  Of course, you can choose any colours you want to!

Gauge

12 stitches and 9 rows = 10cm X 10cm / 4in X 4in

Gauge isn’t critical for this blanket however, if your gauge is very different to this pattern, you can easily adjust your stitch count and rows with my converter tool.

You can easily customise the size, see how the pattern is worked section below for more information.

How the Chunky Stripes Throw is Worked

The design of this chunky throw is as a result of playing around with different colours in swatches when I was choosing the stitch pattern for my Clara cardigan.  Using one colour in the Floret stitch suited the vibe I was hoping to achieve for the cardi but straight away, I knew using the different colours would look fab in a blanket.  I love how everything blends together!

This lapghan uses basic crochet stitches and is worked in chunky yarn using 3 different colours.  All 3 colours are used to work a row of floret stitches – this makes the nupps really stand out and catch the eye!

Close up of the crochet Floret Stitch

Worked flat from the bottom up, you’ll work rows of half double crochet in the main colour before changing to your choice of contrast colour to work a Floret row and a double crochet row.  Changing to the main colour, you’ll then work a row of Floret stitches and continue with double crochet rows before changing colour to your second contrast colour to work a floret row and double crochet row.  This sequence continues throughout the blanket, ending with rows of half double crochet in the main colour.

The border Is worked in 5 rounds of half double crochet using all three colours.

The chunky stripes throw is a simple blanket.  The basic crochet stitches and use of colour with the stitch placements makes it unique.

Customizing your Chunky Blanket

The starting chain needs to be an odd number.  To make your blanket wider chain an odd number of stitches to your preferred width, to make it smaller chain less.

To make your blanket longer, continue repeating the sequence of rows from row 13 – 24, ending with instructions for rows 70 – 75.

To make your blanket shorter, crochet less repeats of rows 13 – 24, ending with instructions for rows 70 – 75.

Pattern Notes

  • Pattern is written in US crochet term.
  • Chain one does not count as a stitch.
  • Chain two counts as a double crochet.
  • Pattern repeats are show between * * for example; *sl st in next st, dc in next st, * you will slip stitch in the next stitch, double crochet in the next stitch and repeat this across the row.
  • Row 7 and repeats, work the slip stitch loosely as this will be worked into in the next row.
  • Main colour is abbreviated to MC, Contrast Colour 1 to CC1 and Contrast Colour 2 to CC2.
  • Colour changes are at the end of a row on the last pull through.  Fasten off each colour once the rows are worked.  The ends will be hidden in the border.
  • The border is worked in rounds and turned at the end of a round to start the next round
  • Weave in ends as you go.
