The unique stitches used in Tunisian crochet create interesting textures and patterns that often stand out compared to knit or traditional crochet hats. In this roundup I’ve handpicked Tunisian crochet hat patterns that showcase the unique beauty and versatility of this crochet technique.

These hats are small Tunisian crochet projects that are ideal for using leftover skeins. Their quick and easy construction make them perfect for gifting too, offering a handmade touch that’s both thoughtful, practical and will be well received.

Tools and Techniques
Let’s take a look at what you will need:
Hooks
Larger Tunisian crochet projects require a special hook, known as a Tunisian crochet hook or Afghan hook. These hooks are typically longer than standard crochet hooks and may have a stopper at the end to hold multiple stitches such as this hook set that I use (this is my set below).

Some patterns also use regular hooks alongside the afghan hooks. The smaller projects in this list mostly use a blend of both types of hooks. The body of the hat uses a Tunisian hook and a regular hook is used for the hat brim or an edging.
Stitches
Common stitches used in Tunisian crochet include the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS), Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS), and Tunisian Purl Stitch (TPS). Each stitch creates a different texture and fabric density. Most patterns in this list have links to tutorials to guide you through working the stitches. However, if you would like to take a look at some tutorials before you decide whether these projects are for you, here are some YouTube tutorials: Tunisian Simple Stitch, Tunisian Knit Stitch, Tunisian Pearl Stitch

Tunisian Crochet Hat Patterns
The fabric produced by Tunisian crochet is typically denser and less stretchy than that produced by traditional crochet making this technique perfect for hats. Have a browse through these projects and I’m sure you’ll find a stylish pattern to keep you warm and cozy. 1. Dark Skies Hat

My Dark Skies hat pattern is worked in the beautiful Tunisian Simple Stitch, while the ribbed brim (which uses single crochet back loop only) adds a classic touch. The instructions come in 4 adult sizes (S, M, L, XL).
A unique feature of this pattern is the option for personalization. I’ve included instructions for weaving different coloured yarns through the vertical bars of the Tunisian Simple Stitch, allowing for you to try out different creative possibilities.
I hope you like it!
2. Peony Tunisian Crochet Beanie Hat

I’ve worked Tunisian Simple Stitch 2 together for my teen/medium adult size beanie. In just 4 repeated rows (including the Return Pass) for 25 rows you’ll have the rectangle crocheted. The brim is added (worked with a traditional crochet hook in rib stitch) before sewing the seam and then cinching together the top. Adding a pom pom is optional.
My pattern also includes a pocket shawl/scarf.
- Recommended tools and materials: 6mm Tunisian Hook, 3.5mm regular crochet hook, DK weight #3 yarn, pompom (I used these)
I have included photos. Look for the print button on the pattern to save as a free PDF to your device.
3. Color Fusion Beginner Tunisian Hat

This hat uses the Tunisian Full Stitch with colour changes before each return pass. I love the weave effect the colour change has on the fabric!
Worked flat as a rectangle, the ends are then seamed together and edged with a row of traditional crochet. The top is cinched together and you’re finished.
- Recommended tools and materials: Size K (6.5 mm) Tunisian crochet hook, worsted weight/aran #4 weight yarn, optional buttons or pom pom
Lots of tutorials are linked to this free pattern, including how to cinch the hat together.
Recommended if you’re a beginner wanting to learn a new technique!
4. Easy Tunisian Hat

The Tunisian Hat pattern from Kickin Crochet is a beginner-friendly project worked in the round using Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS) to create a seamless, knit-look hat.
The hat is constructed as a continuous flat tube, then sewn at the top.
The continuous tube means NO SEAMS 🙂 I know you’ll love this construction, it’s frustrating when seams just don’t lay straight isn’t it. No seam is the business if you have sensitive skin.
- Recommended tools and materials: double ended crochet hook size J, King Cole Drifter DK weight yarn
The pattern includes sizes for toddler to adult large.
Detailed instructions and a video tutorial are provided for working Tunisian crochet in the round.
5. Tunisian Knit Stitch Beanie

The Tunisian Knit Stitch Beanie pattern from One Little Hook is an easy pattern designed for practised beginners.
The hat is worked flat in rows, then seamed and cinched at the top. Key stitches include the Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS), Tunisian Purl Stitch (TPS), and TKS2TOG (two together).
Detailed instructions and photos are provided.
- Recommended tools and materials: 12mm Tunisian crochet hook with 12-inch cord and end stopper, Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick super chunky yarn.
The pattern includes instructions for customization in size (from child to adult) and style, including a slouchy version. Crochet one for each member of your family!
6. Tunisian Crochet Ribbed Hat

I’ve chosen to include this pattern because the construction is different from those above – and of course it looks fab 🙂
The hat is worked from side to side but decreases on the top rows to give shape. The final return pass uses the last remaining loop to drawn the yarn through and close the top of the hat.
The pattern includes diagrams for both the Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS) and Tunisian Purl Stitch (TPS) and easy instructions for how to make the pompom.
- Recommended tools and materials: J/10 (6 mm) Tunisian Afghan crochet hook, Red Heart Super Saver worsted/aran weight #4 yarn
This is a free PDF download from the numbered link above.
7. Crochet Tunisian Ribbed Hat

Not another ribbed hat … ah, but I’ve included this one to show you how similar patterns can look with different yarn.
This ribbed hat uses the same stitches and construction but uses a striped/variegated yarn and if you compare this one with the one above, you’ll notice that this subtle change can make a hat look totally different!
- Recommended tools and materials: Size U.S. J/10 (6 mm) Tunisian crochet hook, Bernat Super Value Stripes worsted / aran #4 weight yarn
This is also a free PDF download from the numbered link above.
8. The Thimble Beanie Free Tunisian Crochet Pattern

The Thimble Beanie pattern from Joy of Motion Crochet is customizable not only for size but it also includes options for a fitted beanie or a slouchy style.
With this hat, the ribbed brim is crocheted with a regular hook first and then you’ll need your Tunisian hook to work the body of the hat. The body is crocheted in the Diagonal Lattice Stitch which is worked by alternating rows of staggered Tunisian Cross Stitch (there is a linked full tutorial for this Tunisian stitch).
- Recommended tools and materials: 10mm / US: N/15 Tunisian crochet hook with cord attached, 9 mm / US: M/13 regular crochet hook, bulky/chunky #5 weight yarn
The designer has rated this skill level as intermediate.
9. Easy Tunisian Crochet Hat

What I really like about this pattern is how easy it is to customize for different sizes using the designer’s chart.
The hat is slightly slouchy with a fold-up brim and features a faux fur pom-pom.
The main stitches used are Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS), Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS), and Tunisian Purl Stitch (TPS).
Worked flat in a rectangle, once you’ve seamed the edges together you’ll thread through the top to cinch the shaping for the top of the hat.
- Recommended tools and materials: 6.5mm Tunisian Crochet Hook, worsted weight #4 yarn
I love that when the brim is folded over, the reverse of the Tunisian stitches looks totally different.
This free pattern is ideal for beginners.
10. Wandering Cables Beanie

If you’re looking for a challenge, you’ll enjoy working on the cables in this pattern. I love the texture!
This beanie is worked flat then seamed, cinching together to close the top. Single crochet ribbing is worked first and then the body of the hat uses .
- Recommended tools and materials: Tunisian Crochet Hook Size 9mm, Crochet Hook Size G-7 (4.5mm), Cable Stitch Holder, Lion Brand Re-Spun Yarn Weight 4 Medium / Worsted
The pattern includes detailed instructions for creating right and left-leaning cables and finishes with a seamless join and optional faux pom-pom.
If you’re at an immediate skill level, this is the pattern for you.
11. Heavenly Hygge Hat

This is a cozy and stylish Tunisian project designed for comfort.
Similar to the other patterns, with this one you can learn to make your own faux fur pompom which I thought might be good fun (as well as learning a new technique).
It features a luxurious texture created with the Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS) and Tunisian Pearl Stitch (TPS) which is worked 2 stitches each alternating across the row.
The pattern is worked flat, seamed with mattress stitch and then cinched at the top.
- Recommended tools and materials: 7mm Tunisian crochet hook, Red Heart Hygge bulky chunky weight yarn
Instructions are written for sizes newborn, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, toddler, child, teen and adult.
