The combination of soft drape and open lace stitches makes the Meadowsong scarf perfect for spring and summer layering.
My lightweight crochet scarf pattern is designed for warmer days, effortless layering, and easy styling.
A simple combination of double crochet, single crochet and chains, creates a beautifully airy fabric with delicate openwork texture.
Worked in rows from side-to-side, the repeating stitch pattern is relaxing to crochet while still looking elegant and detailed.
Easy to customise for both width and length, my design can also be adapted into a lightweight shawl or wrap.
Suitable for confident beginners and relaxing for experienced crocheters, you’ll crochet a wearable accessory that feels light without sacrificing style.
Wear it draped loosely over your shoulders on cool summer evenings or layered with your favourite outfits in spring and autumn.

The free crochet pattern is below. If you prefer to work offline, you can find the premium PDF in my Etsy, Ravelry, and LoveCrafts shops. Thank you so much for supporting my work.

Materials
- DK #3 weight yarn; 297yds/272m
- 4mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle
I use Clover Amour crochet hooks.
Yarn Choices
I used one ball of YarnArt Linen Soft for my sample. I bought this yarn in four different colours for another design idea and didn’t realise it had an uneven/wavy texture.
When I started working with it, I realised it just wasn’t suitable for the project I had in mind but it turned out to be perfect for this lightweight scarf!
The blend of fibres (Linen 30%, Cotton 34% and Viscose 36%) gives the fabric a soft feel with a slightly rustic texture that works beautifully with the open lace stitches of this pattern.
I found it easy to work with. I didn’t have to frog (unpick) any stitches but think this could be a bit tricky with the thicker strands which are quite fuzzy and possibly need more care.
The finished scarf has a lovely drape, feels comfortable against the skin, and creates an airy fabric that’s ideal for warmer weather.
If you use the same yarn, the care instructions recommend handwashing up to 30 degrees and dry flat.
Gauge is not critical meaning you can substitute any DK yarn for this project. I wouldn’t recommend 100% acrylic unless you plan on accessorising in autumn. For summer wear, cotton blends or plant-based fibres work especially well.

Gauge
23 stitches and 8 rows = 4” x 4”
- Gauge is not critical for this project but maintaining your tension is.
- If you substitute the yarn, it is likely you won’t match gauge due to the uneven texture of YarnArt Linen Soft used in this sample.
- If you would prefer to work to my gauge, you can easily adjust your stitches using my stitch gauge converter.
Stitches and Abbreviations
You need to know how to work these stitches:
- single crochet (sc)
- double crochet (dc)
If you need a refresher for how to work these stitches, you’ll find instructions in part one of my stitch library.
For my UK crocheters, the table below is a conversion of basic crochet stitches from US to UK.
| US Crochet Terms | UK Crochet Terms |
|---|---|
| single crochet (sc) | double crochet (dc) |
| half double crochet (hdc) | half treble crochet (htr) |
| double crochet (dc) | treble crochet (tr) |
| treble (tr) | double treble (dtr) |
| double treble (dtr) | triple treble (trtr) |
I have used these common abbreviations in this pattern:
- chain (ch)
- previous (prev)
- repeat (rep)
- skip (sk)
- space (sp)
- stitch/es (st/s)

How the Meadowsong Scarf is Made
My Meadowsong Scarf uses the diagonal diamond and square stitch pattern throughout to create an elegant lacy fabric with beautiful drape.
This stitch pattern only uses double crochet, single crochet, and chains, making it a suitable project for confident beginners and a relaxing make for experienced crocheters.
The scarf is worked side-to-side in rows to create a simple rectangular shape that’s easy to customise for extra length or width if preferred.
How to Customise Meadowsong
- Longer length: if you would prefer a longer scarf, continue repeating rows 2 to 4 to your desired length. Ending on a row 2 repeat finishes off neatly with no need to work a border.
- Wider: I wouldn’t recommend increasing the width for a scarf, but if you would like more coverage, for example to wear as a shawl, just add stitches in multiples of 10 to your desired width.

My Pattern Notes
- Pattern is written in English using US crochet terms.
- Stitch pattern is a multiple of 10 plus 7.
- Chain 3 counts as a double crochet.
- Chain 4 counts as a double crochet, chain 1.
- Stitch repeats in a row are written between the symbol *
- Stitches worked into the same stitch or space are written within brackets [ ] for example, [dc, ch5, dc] in the next st. You will work a double crochet, chain 5 and another double crochet in the same stitch.
- I recommend blocking your finished scarf to help open up the lace stitches and improve drape.
