Clover Lane Crochet Sweater Pattern

An easy crochet sweater pattern made from a two granny square yoke, with custom length, neckline, and yarn weight options.

This sweater will always make me think of the first weeks Clover came home, when every round involved rescuing the yarn from tiny puppy teeth. We’ve definitely progressed now at 23 weeks — I’ve even had a few peaceful crochet sessions with him curled up beside me while I worked.  There was only ever going to be one name for this pattern!

Clover Lane starts with two classic granny squares, which are folded to create the yoke and sleeves before the body is worked in granny stitch rounds. It’s an easy crochet sweater pattern with no shaping, making it a lovely project for confident beginners and anyone who enjoys relaxing, repetitive stitches.

Clover Lane crochet sweater pattern shown in two colourways: a blue and white striped V-neck granny square sweater and a pastel striped version, highlighting one pattern styled in two different looks.

The free crochet sweater pattern below is for the cropped Aran version of Clover Lane.

If you’d like to make it in DK or 4ply, the ad-free PDF includes all three yarn weights in sizes S to 3XL, along with options to customise the neckline depth, body length, and sleeve length.

Make it light and drapey in 4ply for spring and summer, classic in DK for year-round wear, or cosy and cropped in Aran for cooler days.

You can find the premium PDF in my Etsy, Ravelry, and LoveCrafts shops — thank you so much for supporting my work.

Crochet Sweater Sizing

Sizes follow guidance from the Craft Yarn Council.

Yarn amounts are approximate and may vary depending on tension, chosen length, and sleeve customisation.

The sizing and yarn information below is for the cropped Aran/Worsted (#4) version of Clover Lane.

M 36 – 3840320g  /  685 yds  /  626 m
L 40 – 4244375g  /  803 yds  /  734 m
XL 44 – 4648425g  /  910 yds  /  832 m

3XL 52 – 5456500g  /  1,070 yds  /  978 m

DK (#3) and 4ply (#1) sizing and yarn amounts are included in the premium PDF.

If you’d like a baggier fit with more movement, simply go up a size. For example, if your chest measures 38″, following the Medium instructions will give you approximately 2″ of positive ease, while following the Large will give you around 6″ of positive ease.

Materials

  • Aran/Worsted #4 yarn: 631 (685, 803, 910, 963, 1,070) yds / 577 (626, 734, 832, 880, 978) m
  • 5 mm hook for granny squares
  • 4 mm hook for the body
  • tape measure
  • stitch markers
  • scissors
  • yarn needle

I use Clover Amour hooks and Harlequin stitch markers.

Yarn Choices

I used Yarnsmiths Create Aran in White and Royal Blue from my stash. At 8 wraps per inch, this yarn sits right on the border between worsted and a light bulky #5, which gives Clover Lane its cosy structure in the cropped version.

It’s a budget-friendly acrylic yarn that feels soft to work with and is easy to care for — perfect for an everyday crochet sweater. It can be machine washed at 30°C, with ironing or tumble drying on low.

You can substitute any yarn of the same weight that meets gauge.

The yarn amounts in the sizing section show the total yarn needed for a 17.5″ cropped sweater.

If you’d like to use two colours, divide the total yarn evenly between Yarn A and Yarn B. The table below shows the approximate amount needed for each colour.

2XL225g482 yds440 m
3XL250g535 yds489 m

If you choose to extend the sleeves or body length, you will need additional yarn.

Crochet Sweater Construction – How Clover Lane is Made

Granny squares can be the starting point for so many beautiful crochet projects.

If you love working with squares, you might also enjoy browsing flower granny square patterns or bag patterns.

For Clover Lane, two classic granny squares create the yoke and sleeves.

Once folded, joined at the centre, and seamed at the sleeves, the yarn is rejoined to work the body in simple granny stitch rounds.

It really is that easy — no shaping, just clever construction.

One of my favourite things about Clover Lane is how many different looks you can create from the same simple construction.

With just a few small changes, you can customise:

  • sleeve length — keep them at three-quarter length or extend to full sleeves
  • body length — make it cropped, waist length, over the hip, or tunic style
  • neckline depth — join the front and back evenly for matching V-necks, or continue the back seam higher for more coverage
Annotated Clover Lane crochet sweater neckline options showing an even join for the same front and back depth and an offset join for a higher back neckline, illustrated in blue striped and pastel versions.

Different yarn weights and fibres make Clover Lane easy to wear in every season.

The cropped Aran version is cosy for cooler months, while DK creates a classic year-round sweater. In 4ply, the fabric becomes lighter and drapier, making it a lovely choice for spring, summer, and early autumn layering.

The same construction also works beautifully in different lengths, from cropped to over-the-hip or tunic styles.

The premium PDF includes 4ply, DK, and Aran instructions in sizes S to 3XL, making it easy to create the version that suits your wardrobe best.

Just a few small changes can completely transform the fit and feel of your sweater!

My Pattern Notes

  • This pattern is written in English using US crochet terms.
  • Sizes are written as S (M, L, XL, 2X, 3X).
  • Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Ch 3 counts as a double crochet.
  • Stitch repeats are shown with the symbol *.
  • Read the pattern through before beginning to crochet.
  • When folding the granny squares, the folded edge forms the shoulders and the open edges form the neckline and body opening.
  • Once joined, the two granny squares create the yoke and sleeves.
  • To check the depth of the back seam on the folded granny squares, sew the seam but do not fasten off or weave in the end yet. Once the body is complete, try on the sweater to test the neckline fit and adjust the back seam depth if needed.
  • If working in two colours, use Yarn A for 2 rounds and Yarn B for 2 rounds (alternating every 2 rounds) for both the granny squares and body.
  • Weave in ends as you go.
