Tips For Crocheting a Keychain
Here are my top tips to help you before you get started:
1. Use durable yarn.
Cotton yarn is my first choice—it holds its shape, doesn’t pill easily, and stands up well to daily wear. Acrylic works too, but I’ve found it can fuzz over time.
2. Keep your stitches tight.
Tighter stitches help the piece hold its form and prevent stuffing from peeking through. If needed, I recommend you go down a hook size for a firmer finish.
3. Stuff firmly but don’t overfill.
Add just enough stuffing to give shape without stretching the stitches or distorting the design. Once stuffed, I give the project time to settle before sewing any seams. It could be more or less is needed.
4. Choose small, lightweight patterns.
Keep the size of the keyring manageable—big or heavy pieces can pull awkwardly or be uncomfortable to carry on a keyring.
5. Secure your hardware well.
If using metal findings like jump rings, make sure they go through sturdy, tight stitches. For crocheted loops, stitch them down firmly with multiple passes.
6. Weave in ends securely.
Since keychains get handled a lot, weave in your ends carefully—double back if needed to stop them working loose over time.
7. Consider surface details last.
Embroider faces or sew on embellishments after shaping and stuffing. It’s easier to get symmetry and control with a firm piece.

Before we get to the patterns I want to say you don’t have to stick to just keychain-specific patterns—any small amigurumi can be turned into a keychain. Simply add a jump ring or split ring.
On a tight budget? No problem! You can also crochet a simple chain and slip stitch to join where you want the loop to be, crochet your chain to the length you want then slip stitch back into the fabric for a soft and affordable alternative.
