Lawyer Tom Berte’s bucolic new life is about to be shattered by a threat he can’t ignore.
Tom Berte, a former Department of Justice lawyer, thought he’d left his past behind when he moved to Castle Ridge with his family. But when a brutal attack leaves him fighting for his life, Tom and his family find themselves at the epicenter of an unfolding conspiracy that stretches from the local ski resort to a desert compound on the other side of the world.
At the heart of the mystery is Phoenix Holdings Group, a shadowy international conglomerate with its sights set on Castle Ridge Ski Resort. When a catastrophic “accident” at the resort claims dozens of lives, Tom uncovers a chilling connection to his own assault and a ruthless plot that could endanger millions.
The Winter Verdict Review
I thoroughly enjoyed The Winter Verdict, a fast-paced legal thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish.
I previously read The Manipulator, the first book in the Tom Berte series, but I do think this second instalment works well as a standalone too.
Tom’s quieter life in Castle Ridge, after leaving the Department of Justice, gives the story an interesting contrast before everything begins to spiral into danger.
Tom Berte, now settled with his wife and daughter, finds himself drawn into a dangerous conspiracy after a near-fatal attack linked to the ski resort he frequents. As the threats escalate, Tom teams up with cybersecurity expert Darryl to uncover a group intent on causing devastating harm on a much wider scale. The combination of legal intrigue, cyber sabotage, and the looming danger to Tom’s family made the stakes feel incredibly high throughout.
I loved the pace of this book and read it in just a few sittings. The suspense had me completely entranced, and I really enjoyed seeing the characters develop further, especially Tom as he balances protecting his family with doing what is right.
A gripping and thoroughly enjoyable read.
