Emily is back in Ireland after nine long years away from home, when she sees him. Her ex-husband, Rob, holding hands with a five-year-old girl. A girl that should be hers.

Over a decade before, Emily and Rob were in love and happily married. Then tragedy struck and Emily moved to New Zealand to get away. Now, returning to Dublin nearly a decade later for her mother’s funeral, she finds herself face-to-face with her past. The man she loved has a daughter, beautiful little Molly, and Emily’s heart breaks yet again for everything that could have – should have – been.

But Rob and Molly’s lives aren’t without their own misfortunes.

Could a second chance at family heal all their broken hearts?

The Child I Long For Review

Trigger Warning: child loss

Emily moves to New Zealand after the death of her only child. She is only back for her mother’s funeral and fully intends to return to New Zealand.  There are just too many memories in Ireland for her to be truly happy so when she bumps into her ex, Rob who now has another daughter of his own, she is completely blindsided.

She had thought that by moving to the other side of the world she would get distance from her grief but she soon realises that he has not fully processed losing her baby. Connecting with Rob again brings up all sorts of feelings she had long thought were buried. Can she move past what has happened to her and find happiness once again with Rob and the little girl she had grown to adore?

The Child I Long For is a gorgeous, if difficult read at times. The author deals with the heavy subject matter brilliantly and the story progresses beautifully and with sensitivity. I longed for Emily to heal and let herself be happy again.   I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend this tear-jerker of a story.
