A love to last a lifetime…

Gemma knows perfectly well how one moment can change your life forever. That’s why, for two decades, she’s lived life by the rulebook.

But this year, everything is different. The beloved daughter she gave up for adoption all those years ago is about to turn eighteen – and that means, there’s a chance of being found.

For the first time in her life, Gemma can no longer run from her secrets. And she begins to realise that when everything is falling apart, love can be found in the unlikeliest of places.

Because sometimes your true family is the one you pick for yourself…

Forever Yours Review

What can I say … this story hit me emotionally in so many ways.  Forever Yours is blooming magnificent.

From the beginning, when Gem is 16, I liked her.  And that like deepened quickly to respect when she talks about the kids she teaches in college.  Then her backstory made me just want to nurture her and love her unconditionally.

I don’t want to say too much because there is so much for you to discover first-hand.  The way I see it, there is one catalyst that starts a change for Gem and this opens her up to other changes.  One person entering Gem’s life makes her re-evaluate how she’s been living her life and what’s really underlying everything.

Her life coping mechanisms are relatable and understandable … but not the best for committing to long term relationships (and that’s relationships of any kind).

I think this quote says so much about the way Gem has chosen to live her life:

“Being with Karim is like having a box of chocolates open on the kitchen table while you eat celery sticks.”

Brilliant cast of characters.  Margie, her 66 year old neighbour is my favourite.  Or maybe it’s Erin hmmm or maybe Katie.  Haha.  Nope, I loved all the characters.  So much depth.  These characters are still alive in my heart.  They’ve become friends.

There are a few scenes that stand out for me:

  • The fart – the beginning of so much (and VERY FUNNY)
  • The History Club Exhibition – I was on tenterhooks but I was fooled!
  • Dancing it out – BRILLIANT!  I’ve never seen it done quite this way.  I’ve tried it and even though it leaves you aching and breathless it really does work
  • The sweet necklace – OMG I cried.  You’ll see why
  • The staffroom announcement –  much more than it seems on the surface
  • The letters – both in the past and in the present – more tears

Despite the emotive theme of Forever Yours, Gemma’s humour lifts the overall feeling of the story. Did I say I loved her?  She is such a worthy heroine.

Debbie Johnson is brilliant at capturing every day observances and really seeing the underlying emotions (the vending machine!).  Her writing is evocative and will make you look at life differently.

Forever Yours is a story I will remember for a long time.
