Mindful Hands Mosaic Blanket – Free Crochet Lap Pattern

My Mindful Hands Mosaic Blanket is a lap-sized free crochet pattern which I’ve designed with comfort, calm and care in mind. It is ideal for donating to nursing homes, hospitals, hospice centres and charities, or for gifting to anyone who would appreciate a soothing, tactile lap blanket.

The inset mosaic technique creates soft chains on the back of the fabric, making this a perfect fidget-friendly blanket for restless hands, while also adding an extra layer of padding for warmth and comfort. On the front, a gingham design gives the blanket a classic, timeless look.

The border is finished with a combination of double crochet, front post treble crochet, half double crochet and single crochet (worked in a similar technique) to add texture and to create a sturdy edging.

This pattern includes both written instructions and a clear chart, so you can work in the way that suits you best.

Whether you are making this blanket for yourself or for donation, it is designed to be both practical and comforting, with every stitch made to support mindful hands and gentle moments.

You can find the free crochet pattern below, or choose a printable PDF version in US crochet terms from my Etsy, Ravelry or LoveCrafts shops.

Materials

  • DK yarn: Yarn A = 1811 yds (variegated); Yarn B = 1002 yds (neutral colour)
  • 3.5mm crochet hook (border)
  • 4mm crochet hook (I use Clover Amour hooks)
  • Tape Measure
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

Yarn Choices

If you’d like to use the same yarn that I used for this sample blanket, both yarns are from the Yarnsmiths range at Wool Warehouse.

For Yarn A, I used Lagoon DK in the colourway Giola Lagoon (shade 2J070). There are 32 colours to choose from, with new shades added to the range, so I’m sure you’ll find a colour that works for you.

This is a variegated yarn, with some colour changes blending softly while others have a more dramatic shift. I’ve used different colourways of this yarn in both my Lennox Book Sleeve and Emberley Pullover (and I’ve since bought more because I really love how it works up and drapes).

Lagoon DK is a single-ply yarn, so the thickness can vary slightly. I haven’t found this to be an issue in the projects I’ve made, but if needed you can gently twist the yarn as you work to help the strands stay together.

For Yarn B, I used Create DK in White, another Yarnsmiths yarn that I’ve worked with before. It worked beautifully in my Amber Woods Hooded Scarf, and I’ve since added a few more colours to my stash. I’ve also used the Aran weight version in other mosaic blankets, and that works up just as well.

Both yarns can be washed at 30°C, ironed, and tumble dried on a low setting, making this blanket easy to care for and practical for everyday use.

Customising your Yarn Choices

These are my recommendations for choosing your yarn, but you can adapt the colours to suit the person or setting the blanket is being made for.

Yarn A is used for the deeper pink/purple sections, with Yarn B as the white contrast. For the best gingham effect, choose two colours with a strong contrast so the mosaic pattern really stands out.

Light and dark combinations work especially well, making the design easier to see and more visually soothing.

While this sample uses a warm shade and white, any high-contrast colour pairing will give beautiful results.

When choosing colours for blankets made for nursing homes, hospitals or hospice settings, softer and calming shades are often a good choice.

Muted blues, greens, creams, warm neutrals or gentle pastels can feel soothing and comforting, while still giving enough contrast for the pattern to be clear.

Avoid very dark or highly busy colour combinations, as simple, peaceful tones tend to be easier on the eyes and more relaxing for everyday use.

These all give good contrast for the gingham design while staying soft, calm and suitable for care settings:

Warm and comforting

  • Rose pink and ivory
  • Soft berry and cream
  • Dusty rose and pale grey
  • Terracotta and oatmeal

Cool and calming

  • Sage green and soft white
  • Duck egg blue and cream
  • Teal and pale grey
  • Denim blue and snow white

Classic and timeless

  • Navy and cream
  • Charcoal and soft white
  • Mocha brown and ivory
  • Forest green and linen

Gauge

With a 4mm hook and working in single crochet:

20 stitches and 24 rows = 4” x 4”

Although gauge is not critical for this project, maintaining your tension is important.

If you want to keep the same measurements and your gauge is too far out, it’s possible to adjust your stitches using my stitch gauge converter.

Stitches

If you need help working any of the stitches, head over to my stitch library for full instructions.

Mosaic Double Crochet (mdc): a normal double crochet worked in the skipped stitch of the same colour three rows below, working the stitch in front of the two rows of chains in the other colour.

  • single crochet (sc)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)
  • front post treble crochet (fptr)
  • slip stitch (sl st)

Abbreviations

Change colour (cc): Colour changes take place on the last pull through of the single crochet at the end of a row.  When you have two loops on the hook, yarn over with the new colour and pull through the loops on the hook.  Colour change made.

  • chain (ch)
  • each (ea)
  • repeat (rep)
  • Right Side (RS)
  • skip (sk)
  • space (sp)
  • stitch (st)
  • wrong Side (WS)

The next two sections will help you to understand how inset mosaic crochet works and how to follow the chart.

If you already know how it works and you’re not using the chart, jump to how to customise your blanket.

How Inset Mosaic Crochet Works

This technique uses two rows in one colour, back and forth, then the next colour is switched to for the next two rows – this repeats throughout the project.

The yarn not in use is not fastened off but left at the side of the work, ready to be picked up again after two rows.

Both loops are worked into as you normally would.

All mosaic double crochet stitches are worked on the right side.

The first row of colour creates the pattern and the second row in the same colour repeats it.

  • Where a mosaic double crochet was used in the first row, in the second row a single crochet is worked into this stitch.
  • Where a chain space was made in the first row, the same chain space is made on the second row.
  • One more chain is made than the number of stitches skipped.  This is to give space so that the fabric doesn’t pull in.

The image below shows how the right side and wrong side of the Mindful Hands Blanket using this technique.

How to Follow the Mindful Hands Inset Mosaic Crochet Chart

Inset mosaic crochet chart for the Mindful Hands Mosaic Blanket, showing a 16-stitch repeat with numbered rows and stitches, and instructions for reading right side and wrong side rows.
  • The chart is read from the bottom up.
  • Each square in a chart row represents a stitch and each chart row represents two rows of crochet worked back and forth in the same colour.
  • The colour in the first and last squares of the row is the yarn colour of the row.
  • Odd numbered rows (right side) are read from right to left and include an X to denote a mosaic double crochet.
  • Even numbered rows (wrong side) are read from left to right and work a single crochet in the mosaic double from the previous row.
  • When a square in the chart row is a different colour from the working colour, a chain space is made and stitches skipped.  The skipped stitches will be worked with a mosaic double crochet in the next odd numbered row.
  • The first and last stitch of all rows is a single crochet.
  • Rows 1 and 2 are single crochet.
  • The gingham pattern is worked from rows 1 – 26 and repeats from rows 3 – 26.

How to Customise Your Mosaic Crochet Blanket

Although the Mindful Hands blanket is designed as a lap blanket, my pattern can be customised to any size.

  • For the width, work your foundation chain to a multiple of 16 (and add 5) – measure as you go and stop when you’re close to your preferred size.  Don’t forget to add the 4 chains!
  • I wouldn’t recommend you shorten the length but if you needed to, work less repeats of rows 3 – 26.  To lengthen, continue working repeats of rows 3 – 26 to your desired size.
  • Once the border has been set up, 4 rounds complete the edging and adds just over an inch to each side of the blanket.

You might find the table of blanket sizes below helpful:

My Pattern Notes

  • Pattern is a multiple of 16.
  • Yarn A = darker colour; Yarn B = neutral colour.  In this pattern written as A or B.
  • Chain one does not count as a stitch.
  • Row 1 is worked into the back bumps of the chain.
  • The turning chain (chain 1) is at the end of a row, if you’re used to chaining 1 at the start of the row, you can do this too.
  • Colour changes take place at the end of the row on the last pull through of the last single crochet.
  • Pattern repeats are written like this: *stitches to repeat*
  • Weave in ends as you go.

Border:

  • set up is worked on the short edges only and uses slip stitches.  These count as stitches when working round 1.
  • the first and last stitch of each edge is the corner stitch
  • Final round works a half double crochet behind the front post treble crochet stitch of the round below.

There are a few ways you can use this pattern: chart and written instructions together, chart on its own, written instructions only. Use whatever feels most comfortable for you.
