The Trap Summary

How far would you go to catch a killer?

This is the question UK agent Emma Makepeace must ask herself when she is sent to Edinburgh for the upcoming global G7 Summit.

The Russians are in town and Emma and her team know a high-profile assassination is being planned.

But who is their target?

There is only one way to find out. Emma must set a trap using herself as bait.

As the most powerful leaders in the world arrive and the city becomes gridlocked, Emma knows the clock is ticking.

The Trap Review

Emma Makepeace works as an Intelligence Officer, with an unparalleled ability and passion for her job. The agency she works for is so secretive that people do not even know it exists and when information reaches them that the Russians are in Scotland and that there is a potential assassination attempt due to take place at the G7, it’s all hands-on deck to find out what they want and to stop any plot before anyone is even aware of it.

Reluctantly, she is given a partner in the form of Kate McKenzie who works for Scottish police. Neither of them is happy to be working together but they have no choice. Asked to be a ‘honey trap’ to glean information, Emma is faced with a dilemma and her loyalty to the service is tested. They are against the clock and race to resolve the mystery before the G7 takes place.

I found The Trap an engaging and enjoyable read. This spy thriller is refreshing as it has a female lead and a likeable one at that!

I particularly enjoyed the development of the relationship between Kate and Emma and the morals and motivations behind Emma’s actions and line of work.

The story builds to a climactic ending which is full of suspense.

A thrilling read.

About the Author

The Trap follows Ava Glass’ debut spy thriller The Chase and her critically acclaimed 2023 thriller The Traitorwhich was a Grazia Book of the Month, Sunday Times Book of the Year, Washington Post Book of the Year, Cosmopolitan Book of the Year, and Richard & Judy Book Club pick.

Film rights to The Chase and The Traitor have been acquired by the producers of The Night Manager, who are currently working on a pilot, now in the final stages. Next step will be casting!

One of very few women shortlisted for the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger, the UK’s spy fiction prize, and one of the vanishingly few female authors writing about spies, Ava Glass is breaking down the door to the most male dominated genres in the English language – the espionage novel.

Ava Glass’ fiction is based on her first-hand experience working with female spies for the British government, which has seen her dubbed “the new queen of spy fiction” by The Guardian. This alongside a decade working as an investigative journalist and crime reporter in America covering homicides for publications including the New York Times and Reuters makes her writing both fresh and dangerously believable.
