In A Case of Royal Blackmail, the 24-year-old Sherlock Holmes recounts how he untangled the web of blackmail and deceit surrounding the ‘complex romantic endeavours’ of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, those of Lillie Langtry and her various suitors and the morass of scandal surrounding the Prince’s court of 1879.

In between times he also reveals how he solved the cases of Vamberry the Wine MerchantRicoletti of the Club-foot and His Abominable Wife and Oscar Wilde’s Amethyst Tie-pin.

Book Review

A Case Of Royal Blackmail is an interesting story written as a young Sherlock Holmes.

I have always been fascinated by his character since my father explained my great-great grandfather spent some time living with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in London.

A 24-year-old Sherlock Holmes investigates blackmail around the Prince of Wales and his many love interests.

Set in 1879 and before the introduction of John Watson, I was intrigued to follow Holmes without Watson.

I loved the descriptions of London and the celebrity names mentioned who become acquaintances with Sherlock.

I also enjoyed the format of Sherlock retelling his own story and following his movements around London.

Sherlock Holmes is an iconic personality and I felt this version to be as convincing as the original.

A great read.

Sherlock Holmes was a late Victorian and Edwardian consulting detective, known both for his pioneering work in the scientific aspects of criminology and for his powers of deduction and observation. From his late 20s his many cases were well recorded by his friend and flatmate Dr John Watson and some of his exploits have subsequently been made into feature films and TV series.
