Who Knew a Crochet Lap Blanket Could Be This Easy?

I’ve designed the Twilight Haven Blanket as the perfect lap blanket — easy to make, beautifully textured, and just the right size for keeping warm while reading, watching TV, or relaxing.

If you’ve been searching for a lap blanket crochet pattern that works up quickly and looks stunning in ombré or solid colours, my beginner-friendly design is a great choice.

Worked in simple stitch repeats with a pretty three-colour border, it’s a relaxing project you’ll love both making and using.

image shows the Twilight Haven Crochet Blanket. On the left, the blanket is draped over a black metal fence outdoors, displaying its soft pastel stripes in cream, yellow, grey, and lilac with a pink scalloped border. On the right, there’s a close-up of the blanket’s stitch detail and border. Text at the top reads “Twilight Haven Crochet Blanket” and “Easy Pattern,” with “jerasjamboree” at the bottom.

Whether you use an ombré yarn for soft, flowing colour changes (like I did) or stick to a single shade for a timeless look, you’ll end up with a blanket that feels as soothing to crochet as it does to snuggle under.

The free pattern is below. If you prefer working from a PDF this pattern is available to purchase in my Ravelry and Etsy shops.

Notions

Yarn Choices

I’ve been wanting to use Caron Jumbo for ages!  When I designed this lap blanket, I was looking for an ombre yarn and when Caron Jumbo Ombre came up in my Amazon search I knew I wanted to use this yarn.  I’ve used the Carrera Marble colourway.

I found it to be on the heavier side of worsted weight yarn meaning this project worked up quickly.  Another couple of bonuses – it’s a lovely weight to snuggle under! and the texture has a soft feel.

For the border I had Stylecraft Special Aran in my stash.  The cream and parchment blends while the pale rose gives it a pop of colour.  This yarn is always a joy to work with.

Both yarns are 100% acrylic and machine washable.

You can substitute the yarn and if you have yarn in your stash, go for it!

The gauge doesn’t have to be accurate (although your tension does need to be consistent).  Be aware though that this could affect the size of your blanket and you could need more or less yarn than stated in the pattern.

The image shows the Twilight Haven Crochet Blanket draped across the back and seat of a grey outdoor sofa. The blanket is displayed lengthwise, showing its pastel stripes in cream, yellow, lilac, and grey, with a pink scalloped border running along the edges. The stitch texture is clearly visible. The word “jerasjamboree” is written vertically along the right-hand side of the image.

Gauge

With a 5mm hook:

13 double crochet stitches and 7 rows (rows 3 – 9 of pattern) = 4” X 4”

Gauge is not critical for this project however, if your gauge is quite different to mine it will affect the size of your blanket.  You can easily adjust your stitches using my stitch gauge converter.

Stitches and Abbreviations

You need to know how to work these stitches:

  • Single Crochet (sc)
  • Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog)
  • Double Crochet (dc)
  • Crossed Double Crochet (Xdc)
  • Slip Stitch (sl st)

If you need help with any of these stitches, you’ll find instructions in my stitch library.

I’ve used these common abbreviations in my pattern:

  • Between (bet)
  • Chain (ch)
  • Continue (cont)
  • Each (ea)
  • Previous (prev)
  • Remaining (rem)
  • Repeat (rep)
  • Right Side (RS)
  • Skip (sk)
  • Space (sp)
  • Stitch/es (st/s)
The image shows the Twilight Haven Crochet Blanket neatly folded and displayed on a grey outdoor sofa cushion. The blanket features pastel ombré stripes in cream, yellow, beige, and lilac, finished with a pink scalloped border. The layered stitches and textured pattern are visible along the folded edges. The word “jerasjamboree” is written vertically along the right-hand side of the image.

How to Crochet the Twilight Haven Blanket

When I was designing my Selene cardigan, I knew I wanted to use the same stitch pattern in a blanket.  It’s only taken me 2 years to get there! It’s worked up exactly as I thought it would.

Although I used ombre yarn for this sample blanket, I think it would look just as fab in one colour.  I am planning to but hopefully it won’t take 2 years!

Blanket:

  • The stitch pattern is worked in a 7-row repeat using rows of double crochet, double crochet clusters and crossed double crochet.
  • Rectangular in shape, the blanket is worked in turned rows.
  • Before beginning the border, a round of slip stitches is made around the edges.  This gives a firm structure to work into and stops the ruffling that can happen when working across the long edges of a blanket.

Border:

  • The border is worked in 3 rounds in 3 different colours.  Round 1 works single crochet into the back loop of the slip stitches.  Rounds are joined with a slip stitch.
The image shows two close-up views of the Twilight Haven Crochet Blanket. On the left, the folded corner highlights the pink scalloped border with cream and pastel stitches. On the right, a detailed section of the blanket displays the stitch pattern in soft shades of cream, yellow, lilac, and beige. The textures of the clusters and rows are clearly visible. The word “jerasjamboree” is printed at the bottom of the image.

How to Customise the Size of your Blanket

It’s easy to make adjustments for the size of your lap blanket.

To make yours wider, add multiples of 4 to your starting chain until you reach your desired width.

For a longer length, work more row 3 – 9 repeats before finishing off with a row of single crochet.

If you make adjustments, you will need to consider the border too.  This is worked in multiples of 4 + 3 + corners.  But don’t worry if it’s too hard to get exactly the number of stitches, you can adjust the number of stitches.

There are several ways you can do this and you can choose the method that suits you best:

  1.  Adjust the number of slip stitches evenly around the edges in the border set up round.
  2. Work 2 single crochet together evenly spaced in round 2 (this is what I have done in this pattern).
  3. Skip 1 stitch more, or 1 stitch less in round 2.  If you need to do this more than once, space the adjustments you need to make evenly.
The image shows two views of the Twilight Haven Crochet Blanket. On the left, the blanket is draped over a cushioned wicker chair, showing its pastel ombré stripes in cream, yellow, lilac, and grey with a pink scalloped border. On the right, the blanket is displayed across the back of a grey outdoor sofa, highlighting the length, colour changes, and textured stitches.

You might find the table of blanket sizes below helpful when customising your blanket.

My Pattern Notes

  • Chain 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Blanket – Chain 2 counts as a double crochet.
  • Blanket – chain 2 is worked at the end of a row to keep the edges neat but if you prefer to work your turning chain at the start of rows, that is fine too.
  • Row 5 (and repeats) the chains from row 4 are skipped, working in the double crochet stitches only.
  • Border – chain 3 counts as a double crochet.
  • Border – chain 3 is made at the start of a row for ease of instructions.
  • Border – round 1 works the single crochet into the back loop of the slip stitches.
  • Border – rounds are joined with a slip stitch.
  • Repeated instructions are written like this *stitch repeats*
  • Weave in ends as you go.
  • Keep these notes in mind as you are crocheting.

Twilight Haven Blanket Summary

The Twilight Haven Blanket is a free crochet lap blanket pattern that’s both beginner-friendly and relaxing to work on. Using a simple 7-row stitch repeat, the design builds quickly in worsted weight yarn, and the finished size (40″ x 53″ including the border) is just right for snuggling. A three-colour border adds the finishing touch, and the pattern is easy to customise if you’d like to make yours larger or smaller.
