It was meant to be the start of quiet season in the sleepy Cornish village of Seal Bay, but not for sexagenarian librarian and wild swimming enthusiast Morwenna Mutton. Because when a local businessman is found on the beach with a bread knife is his back, bungling police officer DI Rick Tremayne is soon out of his depth. Morwenna knows it’s going to be down to her to crack the case.

The list of people the victim upset is long, the evidence is slight, and an arrest illusive. Morwenna has plenty to occupy her time what with ghostly goings-on at the library and skullduggery at her granddaughter’s school, but she could never resist a challenge. And even the most ruthless of murderers should quake at the sight of this amateur sleuth getting on her bike to track them down.

If you love Miss Marple and The Thursday Murder Clubthen you’ll love The Morwenna Mutton mysteries.

Book Review

Morwenna Mutton lives in the Cornish village of Seal Bay. She likes nothing more than racing to her part time library job on her bike, dressed in zany outfits and with a sense of purpose. She loves wild swimming and is also co-owner of a tea room (that she also works in sometimes). She owns the tea room with her daughter who is engaged to someone from outside of Seal Bay. When a businessman turns up and wants to buy the tea room, Morwenna and her daughter refuse to let it go but he won’t give up very easily!

One night he is found dead on the beach with a bread knife stuck in his back. When the local policeman seems to be out of his depth, Morwenna rises to the challenge. She can help find the culprit, not least because suspicion falls on her and her daughter for not selling the tea room. Will she solve the mystery?

I found Foul Play at Seal Bay to be a light-hearted and entertaining story with plenty to keep me interested all the way through.

Morwenna is a loveable, interesting character and just so refreshing! I rooted for her as she tried to work out the murderer and found myself smiling in many parts of the story.

It was great to get a little snapshot of Morwenna’s life on Seal Bay and felt as though she was a friend!

A gorgeous book.
