1. Reading Calms you Down

If you are feeling anxious or if you are feeling overwhelmed then immersing yourself in a good book is always a good idea.

Reading is one of the best ways for you to overcome stress and it’s just as good as going out on a walk or listening to music.

The great thing here is that it doesn’t matter what kind of book you read. You just need to make sure that you are engrossed in the content, so be mindful of this if you can.

If you want to try and expand your knowledge on a particular topic then reading is great for that too. If you want a good book, why not check out drinking with the Valkyries?  Or you can buy a book that relates to a particular hobby that you may have right now.

Top tip: It might feel like sometimes you are reading the same sentence again and again when your mind is in a whirl. Try to image the scene you are reading about and put yourself as the character. Keep persevering.

2. Preventing Disease

Research has shown time and time again that those who read are far less likely to develop Alzheimer’s.

The brain is an organ, and just like any other organ in the body, you need to make sure that you take care of it.

Physical activity may strengthen the heart, but reading is an intellectual activity that helps to strengthen the brain, not to mention that it is a great way to practice self-care.

3. Tapping into your Imagination

If you can immerse yourself in another world, then this can help you to tap into your imagination. This will impact your creativity overall.

The great thing about reading is that it helps you to open up a world of possibilities and it also helps to keep you interested long after you’re finished turning the page. Some people end up so inspired by the books they’re reading that they end up writing their own books. They use tools like ProWritingAid to give their writing an upgrade as they go, but they can create whole new worlds just from the inspiration they get from the genres they read. Becoming a writer off the back of your hobby of reading? That’s a future you can gain from reading your favourite books!

A book will transport you to a whole new world and it also helps you to be a better problem-solver and critical thinker.

4. Increasing your Empathy

Did you know that reading fiction can help you to increase your empathy?

It can also help you to stay engaged and to connect with people on a deeper level.

You may find that you become more aware of other people’s lives and that you are also able to move past your own assumptions of stereotypes.

Reading really is the best way for you to expand your understanding of others.

5. Sleeping Better

Reading signals to the brain that it is time to slow down and get a bit of rest.

Unlike using your phone, or watching television, there are no bright screens that stimulate your brain.

If you can read for just 20 minutes a day, before you go to bed, you will soon see that this can help you to unwind while preparing you for a good night’s rest.
