Since the summer, I have been attending therapy sessions through my local NHS Steps2Wellbeing programme and it has had such a positive effect on my thoughts and well-being.
Many people are put off by the suggestion of attending therapy but doing so can actually bring a very wide range of benefits. Especially if you’re willing to be open and engage.

Therapy Can Help You Feel Less Alone
One of the best things that therapy can do for us when we’re facing challenges in life is to make us feel a little less alone with our struggles.
When we’re dealing with difficult things in life, those challenges can sometimes overwhelm us and leave us feeling very vulnerable and isolated.
But when we have the support of people who are there to assist us and help us work through these issues, it can be a whole lot easier and more manageable.
One thing I realised is that despite feeling isolated, in reality I wasn’t alone. This was such a positive thing to realise.
Therapy Leaves You Better Prepared to Deal with Future Challenges
Therapy is not just about helping us deal with issues that are challenging us in the present, but also about leaving us better prepared to deal with whatever future challenges and struggles we might face.
It can teach us a lot about ourselves, as well as teaching us new skills. And both of those things can turn out to be hugely helpful when taking on challenging tasks in the future.
That’s one of the most important aspects of therapy.
Therapy Provides New Perspectives
When we attend therapy sessions, one of the best things about doing so is the way in which it delivers us new perspectives that we might never have had access to otherwise.
In response to my journal, my therapist guides me forward to my next steps. Each step is a process for me to discover a new perspective independently.
When we get the chance to see things differently and gain outside perspectives on the very personal things that we’re dealing with, we can start to look at them and assess them afresh. I can vouch for this!
This might sound like an abstract concept now, but in practice it is hugely helpful and beneficial.
Repressed Emotions Cause Future Problems
If the alternative to attending therapy sessions is simply repressing our emotions and ignoring them, this is not the route to take.
Therapy allows us to discuss and open up about what we’re dealing with, allowing us to deal with things better.
Closing down and repressing emotions that are challenging us will only lead to further problems arising later on and that’s obviously not what you want.
Therapy Can be Used to Treat a Range of Mental Health Problems
Therapy can be attended by anyone, even if you just want to talk. Even with the current pandemic, sessions can still take place remotely.
Different types of therapy can also be used to treat a range of different mental health problems.
For example, many people benefit from CBT to treat depression. And therapy has been known to work for people who have anxiety issues, among many other different problems. Everything from eating disorders to phobias can be treated with the right kind of therapy delivered by a professional.
Therapy Brings Long-Term Benefits
There are many long-term benefits that come with going through therapy.
Even though your issue may be related to something that is happening in your life now, your responses to that issue are behavioural and probably the way you have dealt with issues in the past. Don’t focus on the short-term. You will learn valuable skills and change the way you respond to stressors in your life.
That’s the great thing about therapy; it’s not a short-term fix.
You have to be willing to deal with the underlying and fundamental issues that are causing you distress or problems.
A good therapist will help you get to the bottom of problems and deliver long-lasting benefits for you regarding your mental health and personal life in general.
At my initial assessment I was offered five different treatment routes and discussed the benefits of each with my therapist before I chose the route that I felt suited my situation the best.
Successful Therapy Treatments Lead to Physical Benefits Too
It’s not just about the mental health side of things though. People going through mental health struggles often find that their problems have physical manifestations too.
By tackling them with the right kind of therapy, you can make sure that the physical benefits are felt at the same time as the mental ones.
Therapy is about tackling the root problems rather than just treating the symptoms.
As you can see, there’s a very wide range of ways in which therapy can be beneficial, especially when you’re experiencing it for the first time.
