The Blameless Dead Gary Haynes

In the dying days of World War Two, Pavel Romasko and his Red Army colleagues pick their way through the detritus of a dying Berlin. Stumbling upon the smoking remains of a Nazi bunker, they find something inside that eclipses the horror of even the worst excesses in the city above them.

As the war ends, retribution begins. But some revenge cannot be taken at once. Some revenge takes years.

Which is how, seventy years later, FBI agent Carla Romero and New York lawyer Gabriel Hall are enlisted to investigate a series of blood-chilling crimes that seem to have their roots in the distant past — even though the suffering they cause is all too present. And for one of them, the disappearance of young women is a particularly personal matter.

The Blameless Dead is an epic edge-of-the-seat drama that sweeps across centuries and continents, taking in some of the most important events of modern history and exposing them in honest and unflinching terms.

The Blameless Dead by Gary Haynes is published by Endeavour Quill (18 March 2019) and available to purchase in digital and paperback formats.

Review

Wow this book has plenty of action, murder, crime, revenge and superb historical detail. It also includes at times unsettling and gruesome details so not for the faint-hearted.

I thoroughly enjoyed the historical element to this book as it was clear Gary Haynes has spent a considerable amount of time in his research of WWII, the secret police and both German and Russian history.

A dual timeline between Berlin 1945 and New York 2015.  FBI agent Carla Romero and lawyer Gabriel Hall investigate a murder with a connection to the past.

This is a dark story which portrays the horrors of war. The history of Kalmykia is entwined within the plot and I was interested as I have never heard of this region before.

Even though I loved this book there is a complex plot and I needed to concentrate to keep up, as the timeline switched regularly.  There are lots of characters with their own sub plots, so not a light read.

A fascinating story!
