We’re delighted to be sharing Elena’s thoughts about Gathering Dark by Candice Fox.

This is a stand-alone thriller which is inspired by a year when Candice lived in LA and had the opportunity to interview notorious criminals face-to-face – and find out what makes them tick.

But when a former cellmate begs for help finding her missing daughter, Blair must risk it all to save a young life. Her only allies are a thief, a ganglord and the cop who put her away.

To do the right thing, Blair must mix with all the wrong people.

Review

Gathering Dark is a fast paced and gritty thriller set in LA. The main characters are Blair Harbour and Jessica Sanchez. Blair (also known as the neighbour killer) is an ex surgeon who has been in prison for a number of years for murdering her neighbour. She has a young son Jamie and upon her release she is determined to repair her relationship with him and avoid getting back into trouble now she’s on parole. Upon her release however a former inmate called Sneak turns up out of the blue asking for help to find her missing daughter Daly. Blair must decide whether to risk everything she has fought to get back.

Jessica Sanchez is a detective who has just inherited a multi-million dollar mansion from a victim’s father after having helped him track down his daughter’s killer. She originally arrested Blair after she killed her neighbour and is subjected to bullying in the workplace because of her inheritance. She becomes disillusioned and upset and eventually teams up with Blair to help her find Daly despite having put her in prison.

I loved that the main characters are all female and they are strong and richly depicted. The author brilliantly portrays the themes of motherhood, sexism, racism and bullying.

I raced through the book eager to find out how the story would end and whether they would find Daly. It didn’t disappoint. It was entertaining, thrilling and left me wanting to read other books by Candice Fox.

Candice Fox is the middle child of a large, eccentric family from Sydney’s western suburbs. The daughter of a parole officer and an enthusiastic foster-carer, Candice spent her childhood listening around corners to tales of violence, madness and evil as her father relayed his work stories to her mother and older brothers. Candice won back-to-back Ned Kelly awards for her first two novels – Hades and Eden. She is also the author of the critically acclaimed Fall, Crimson Lake, Redemption and Gone by Midnight. Candice’s first collaboration with James Patterson, Never Never, was a Sunday Times and New York Times no. 1 bestseller.
