Annabelle Dare is in a good place. She landed a sweet job, teaching at the quaint Fox River Elementary School. She has everything she needs: teaching music and sharing an apartment with her best friend. A simple life, she’s convinced, is all she needs.

Asher Grace knows who he is and what he has to offer. Nothing. A poor boy from the wrong side of town, steel worker, with too much weight on his shoulders as he is trying to hold his family together. Best choice is avoiding too-sweet-for-her-own-good Annabelle at all costs.

Annabelle falls in love with the way she comes to life with Asher. He awakens a hunger for life and love in her that she didn’t know she possessed.

Asher must learn his worth beyond his upbringing and his past. Annabelle must learn to stoke the fire of life as it burns within her and learn how close she can get before the flames lick her.

Hi Jess,

Welcome to Jera’s Jamboree.

Please tell us about the characters in Fierce Grace.

Annabelle Dare has moved to the oh so small and quaint town of Fox River, North Carolina, to be the elementary school music teacher.  She has a background of playing Appalachian music, and a few ghosts to go along with her past.  This is a young woman who insists she doesn’t need love in her life, and she’s perfectly happy the way things are.

Asher Grace is a motorcycle riding, steel working, play boy.  And the roommate of Annabelle’s best friend’s boyfriend.  He’s loyal to a fault – if he lets you in, and that isn’t likely.  After a chance encounter, Asher takes the risk and pursues Annabelle.

Two of my favourite characters in Fierce Grace are their best friends.  Nate, who grew up with Asher, is dating Kendra, and is always quick with a smile and compliment.  And Kendra, Annabelle’s bestie and roommate, who is supportive, funny, and eager to help Annabelle face her fears.  Putting them all together was such fun!

How do your characters come into existence Jess?  Do they have a bio?

I have the characters first, then follow them into the story.  I usually have a general idea of where they’ll go, but they tend to lead the way.  A basic bio is in my mind when I start, and it grows along with the story.  I keep a document full of all the details – especially as I write books with cross over characters!

If you could choose to be one of your characters, who would you be?

The easy answer would be Maggie (from my first book, The Guilt of a Sparrow) because she’s the most like me.  But I would choose Kendra, the best friend and roommate in my new book (Fierce Grace).  She’s confident, a wonderful friend, funny, and committed to being happy.  Sounds good, right?  I had a blast writing her and basing her loosely on one of my real life friends.

What scene did you enjoy writing the most?

The fair scene.  There’s something magical about the fair anyway – throw two people in denial about their crushes on each other in that atmosphere, and watch what happens!  I loved writing about the lights, the food, the rides, the fear, the excitement.  All of it.

Can you tell us about your covers.  Do you have a theme?  Who designs them?

Theme is art.  I love watercolor, I love paintings of women, especially anything that shows emotion.  My publisher (Crooked Cat Books) really helped me nail the vibe with both of my book covers.

Who would you cast in the role of your characters if your book were optioned for a movie?

This is the most fun thing to think about!  Love it.  (Admittedly I’m not up on my celebrities, and went to Pinterest to help my search).  🙂

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, when he had a buzz cut and looked super tough.  That’s Asher.  Cute, total sweetheart once you get to know him, but unapproachable at first.

If Zooey Deschanel was still twenty-four, her all the way, she’s Annabelle.  I’ll go with Willa Holland, who I can imagine pulling off the somewhat aloof, always overthinking, needs to come out of her shell Annabelle.

Do you think movie adaptations do books justice?

Do you have a favourite Jess?

Yes and no.  I have to go into watching the movie knowing it will be changed, and thinking through what it needs to work visually rather than as a book.  Sometimes too many liberties are taken.  One I love is Inkheart.  The book is by Cornelia Funke, and it’s brilliant.  The movie, albeit different, is equally wonderful.  Truthfully, the movie helped me fall absolutely in love with the character Dustfinger.  On the other hand, I thought the Percy Jackson books were amazing, and did not appreciate their movie adaptation at all (could have been a successful movie series if they hadn’t changed so much!).

What are you reading now?

Just finished Dr. Strangebeard, by Penny Reid.  Absolutely loved it, as I knew I would.  Her Winston Brothers series is my favourite right now.  Next up will be The Things We Leave Unsaid, by Megan Mayfair.  It’s her debut, and I’ve heard good things about it, and can’t wait to read it.

Finally, can you share with us your writing plans for the future?

I have a plan, even if it doesn’t like it yet.  My debut, The Guilt of a Sparrow, is the first book in what I plan to become a series.  In fact, The Worth of a Penny is slated to come out in 2019!  Fierce Grace is the first in a separate, yet connected, series of its own.  I’ve planned three in each series, with six total, hopefully releasing two a year.

Thank you for being my guest today.

Wishing you success with all your writing projects Jess.

Jess lives in small town North Carolina with her bluegrass obsessed family.  She takes too many pictures of her cats, thinking the Internet loves them as much as she does.  She is a firm believer of swapping stories over coffee or wine, and that there should always be dark chocolate involved.
