Review | The Lake House | Christie Barlow

We’re delighted to be sharing Elena’s thoughts about The Lake House by Christie Barlow on the Rachel’s Random Resources tour today.

Ella gets the shock of her life when her fiancé Dr Alex James disappears without a trace and with no explanation. Imagining him lying dead somewhere she is beside herself until the police inform her that Alex James was not his real name, he was not actually a doctor and to top it off he has taken her inheritance – all £250,000 of it and left her with a mountain of debt.

Broken and not knowing which way to turn her best friend Callie is there to pick up the pieces. She drags her back to the village she lives in, Heartcross, lets her stay at her flat and gets her a job as a waitress alongside her at The Lakehouse, which can only be reached by boat. Without a penny to her name she has to start completely from scratch but things look up when she meets Roman, who is in charge of the boat ride and her commute, and has secrets of his own to contend with.

The Lake House is simply gorgeous and I just loved all the characters. The setting seems totally idyllic and I’d like to live in Heartcross myself!

The Lake House restaurant itself sounds beautiful and as it’s experiencing hard times, Ella is called upon to turn its fortunes around and I enjoyed watching her rise to the challenge.

I felt really sorry for Ella and was rooting for her to get her life back on track as she’s a truly likeable character. Her best friend Callie is caring and supportive, Roman is dreamy but the star of the show is Dolores, eccentric and friend to the stars.

The romance between Ella and Roman bubbles away slowly and deliciously in the background as they share their individual hardships.

The author has written a gem of a feel-good story with wonderful characters and a stunning setting and I would love to read more in the series.
