Review | The Captive | Deborah O’Connor

We’re delighted to be sharing Laura’s thoughts about The Captive by Deborah O’Connor on the Compulsive Readers tour.

The Captive is an original psychological thriller which although at times seemed far-fetched I found captivating and intriguing.

Hannah Cavey’s husband John, a Met officer was murdered on active service and with a new restorative justice system in place meant she ends up having the perpetrator living in a cage in her kitchen. The new system designed to save money and to allow the criminal to discover the damage they have caused to their victim’s family.

Hannah a cake maker is in a way sentenced to house and feed Jem for 20 years. At times it’s hard to comprehend this system and whether the victim is left with the toughest deal in this situation.

A dark and intense read with twists and turns to keep the reader intrigued. Jem strikes a relationship with Hannah to prove his innocence.

A great read with a thought-provoking plot.
