Review

Eleven Days in June is the story of Dan, who is 20 years old and lives with his mother in a small village in Devon. His father has left them and Dan misses him. His mother has met a new partner and Dan isn’t thrilled about it. He works in a little hardware shop in the village and his life ticks along nicely until a new arrival at the village, the beautiful Libby, walks into his life and turns everything he knew upside down.

It’s clear from reading Dan’s point of view that he has a way of thinking that’s different to the norm. He’s obsessed with Nelson and loves numbers and this means his outlook is at times at odds with those around him. For example, he misreads Libby’s signals and imagines them being married after only a couple of meetings and an innocent request for him to help her with some DIY. His colleague Roy is the absolute opposite of him in every way and Dan just doesn’t understand him at all.

There are flashbacks during the ‘eleven days’ of his childhood friend Ollie, and Dan yearns for the one person who truly ever understood him.

This is a sweet, gentle and absorbing novel that swept me along with it. Before I knew it, I was in Little Leaf with Dan! I loved Dan’s character and really rooted for him, wanting him to find true happiness and someone to finally understand him.

The story flowed really well and Dan’s unique and chatty style made me laugh at times (his Brylcreem incident being one).

The author has done a great job at bringing Dan to life and I would absolutely love to read more in the Little Leaf series.

About the Author

book cover for Eleven Days in June by Rupert Colley

I am a writer of historical fiction and short factual history.

I was born one Christmas Day, which means, as a child, I lost out on presents. Nonetheless, looking back on it, I lived a childhood with a “silver spoon in my mouth” – brought up in a rambling manor house in the beautiful Devon countryside.

It’s been downhill ever since.

I was a librarian for a long time, a noble profession. Then I started a series called History In An Hour which I sold, along with my soul, to HarperCollins UK.

I now live in London with my wife, two children and dog (a fluffy cockapoo) and write historical fiction, mainly 20th century war and misery.
