We’re delighted to be sharing Elena’s thoughts on A Widow’s Vow by Rachel Brimble on the Rachel’s Random Resources tour.

Louisa Hill used to be a prostitute until Anthony saves her from the brothel she was working in. They marry and she goes to live with him along with her friend and fellow prostitute Nancy. When one day, in 1851, a constable knocks on the door to tell her Anthony has been found hanged in a house he owns that she knows nothing about in Bath. He leaves behind a mountain of debt that Louisa must pay off and all that is left is the house in Bath she knew nothing about and the only way she knows to support herself. Along with Nancy and another girl, Octavia, they embark on turning the house into an upmarket brothel.

She meets Jacob, a boxer who has his demons. She asks him to go and work for her as protector and as he is haunted by the death of his mother at the hands of his violent father, he seeks to ensure he protects the women from harm, something he was unable to do for his mother. Feelings between Louisa and Jacob get stronger and they must learn to cope with these despite their unorthodox life.

I absolutely loved A Widow’s Vow.

The storytelling is entirely captivating and I really felt drawn in to their story.

I love how strong and independent the three women are and how they triumph through adversity, in control of their bodies and their livelihoods.

Jacob is a loveable character and I was willing him to get together with Louisa.

The way the author describes Bath in that era was fantastic and I could really imagine the streets and buildings.

I couldn’t put this book down and I’m excited for the series.  I would love it if it each story focuses on each of the women!
