You know how it goes … you start the day in a positive frame of mind and then something happens that brings shadows. No matter what it was that brought your good mood down, I can guarantee you’ll be over-thinking the situation.
How can you can you be resilient and cope with those situations that send your mood spiralling down?
The following exercise will help you put into proportion what happened and also leave you feeling positive again.
To begin with write down 3 things that are good in your life right now. Whatever you choose, they must bring a smile to your face and make you feel good. Why? So that you can start this exercise from a positive mind-set.
Next, spend some time thinking about the experience that had a negative impact on your emotions – you might have felt angry, irritated, upset, sad or embarrassed. Write it down giving a brief description of what happened.
Follow this with 3 things that can help you see a different, more positive perspective of what happened.
I’ll share with you one of my recent experiences.
I was really excited about taking delivery of a new writing desk, however, my excitement didn’t last long…
The first frustration for me was when the courier only had one of the two packages. The second one was on a different truck and would be delivered separately. My negative feelings started to increase when I opened the packages and realised I had been sent the drawers of the model I ordered but with the desk top of a completely different model. Talking to the seller, it was agreed that I would send both packages back and once they received it, they would send the correct packages. The replacement came … and this time I had two drawers from the two different models and no desk top. You can imagine how I was feeling!
Three positives from this experience:
- I’m not the only one in the world this is happening to. Which means returns are helping to keep couriers in employment.
- I found a replacement writing desk (at the same price) with another company which suits my needs better and was delivered within 24 hours of placing my order. It was delivered already built. No assembly needed 🙂
- The seller benefited as it highlighted a problem in their warehouse and they were able to correct it for future customers.
Looking at my experience from the three positives above means that I didn’t keep going over and over the way I felt thus perpetuating my frustration and anger. It allowed me to let it go and move forward. I was resilient, recovering really quickly from what was for me, a difficult situation.
If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
Dr. Wayne Dyer
When something happens that alters your good mood, do the exercise and you will be able to move forward. Training your thoughts to look at things in this way means that when something does happen, you’ll already have this skill to help you cope. You’ll be resilient. It won’t affect your positive mood.
Let me know how the exercise works for you.
