What is filet crochet?
In filet crochet, the fabric is created by working with a single colour of yarn and creating chains and double crochet stitches to form open and filled squares. The open squares are typically created by working chains between double crochet stitches, while the filled squares are created by working double crochet stitches into the previous row.
This throw blanket pattern uses open squares.
The pattern for filet crochet is typically worked from a chart or diagram that shows the placement of open and filled squares.

Design Inspiration
I’ve never been to Greece – although I feel as if I have through the settings in fiction novels!
Isabelle Broom is an author who has the amazing skill of bringing her settings alive and drawing in your senses. I always feel as if I have been on a journey (both physically and emotionally!) with her stories. It was while reading The Summer Trip that the idea of this blanket came to me.
I wanted to include the blues of the ocean and a symbol of Greece in this free crochet throw. I couldn’t think of anything more fitting than a Greek Key … not to be used as a border but an intrinsic part of the free crochet throw blanket pattern.
It took me a while to work out the filet design but I got there in the end!
Let your imagination take you to the Greek coastline, feasting your eyes on the blue of the sea and the heat haze shimmering off the buildings.
How the pattern is worked
The pattern is written in UK and US crochet terms.
The pattern is in multiples of 40.
This crochet blanket is worked in 4 colours.
Sections of a Greek key filet pattern in hues of blue are alternated with sections of crossed treble crochets in white.
The Greek Key sections are different sizes:
- the middle section has 3 repeats
- either side of the middle has 2 sections in each
- either end has 1 section
Each section has 8 rows to the filet pattern.
There are 4 crossed treble sections. Each section begins and ends with treble crochet. There are 8 rows in total for this section.
A simple border of 1 round of double crochet and 2 rounds of treble crochet in white complete the pattern.

Yarn Choices
This blanket pattern uses DK yarn weight.
I’ve used Emu Classic from The Knitting Network.
Soft and smooth, this is a premium acrylic yarn that is a great choice for everyday but best of all, it’s very affordable!
The chunky yarn is as great as the DK weight too. I haven’t used the super chunky yet and I have my fingers crossed there will be an Aran weight coming out at some point …
Pattern Notes
- Chain 1 does not count as a stitch
- Chain 3 does count as a stitch
- Yarn A = white; Yarn B = cadet; Yarn C = airforce; Yarn D = seafoam
- Each section continues from the one before with color changes taking place at the end of rows.
- The new colour is joined on the last pull through of the stitch before the color change takes place.
- I prefer to carry my yarn which is hidden within the border. You can also cut your yarn and re-join
- Blanket is worked in rows
- Border is worked in rounds
