Hi Jami,

Welcome to Jera’s Jamboree.

Please summarise All Grown Up in 20 words or less.

All Grown Up is an honest, true-to-life account of what it means to be a twenty-first-century woman.

Please tell us about the characters in your novel.

The narrator of All Grown Up is Andrea Bern, a woman nearing forty who lives in New York City and is trying to figure out what it means to be an adult. She’s witty and complicated and flawed and funny.

Do you have a most creative time of day Jami?

The mornings work best for me, when my brain is still fresh and clear and I haven’t yet spoiled it with the internet.

Do you have a favourite place you go to for inspiration or a favourite activity?

I love wandering the stacks at a bookstore, and I also like to take a long walk with my dog at a park near my house. But I also love a morning at a café, free from technology, with just a blank notebook and a pen in front of me. Sometimes the best inspiration comes from absolute quiet.

How do your characters come into existence Jami? Do they have a bio?

I hear them talking to me and I just start writing down everything they’re saying to me. Sometimes I do actually write a list of things that I know about them, or I’ll do a sketch of them. (I’m not a particularly good artist but it keeps me in the mindset.)

Which authors have influenced your writing?

For this book it was Grace Paley, Eileen Myles, Patti Smith, Alexander Chee, and Maggie Nelson.

Finally Jami, what are you reading now? Opinion?

I’m currently reading Hannah Tinti’s forthcoming novel The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley and it’s magnificent: expertly told, emotionally true, and deeply compelling.

Thank you for being my guest Jami.

Wishing you success on your blog tour.

Jami Attenberg

Andrea is a single, childless 39-year-old woman who tries to navigate family, sexuality, friendships and a career she never wanted, but battles with thoughts and desires that few people would want to face up to.

Told in gut-wrenchingly honest language that shimmers with rage and intimacy, All Grown Up poses such questions as:

– What if I don’t want to hold your baby?
– Can I date you without ever hearing about your divorce?
– What can I demand of my mother now that I am an adult?
– Is therapy pointless?
– At what point does drinking a lot become a drinking problem?
– Why does everyone keep asking me why I am not married?

Powerfully intelligent and wickedly funny, All Grown Up delves into the psyche of a flawed but mesmerising character. Readers will recognise themselves in Jami Attenberg’s truthful account of what it means to be a 21st century woman, though they might not always want to admit it.

I've been blogging about my interests at Jera's Jamboree for 8+ years. My love of reading, crocheting, being out in nature and positive psychology are all things that help me unwind from my role as an Inclusion Lead in a primary school.
