We’re delighted to be sharing Elena’s thoughts on What She Saw by Diane Saxon on tour with Rachel’s Random Resources.
Gordon Lawrence, control freak businessman, has shot his entire family as a result of his reaction to the downfall of his business and has set his mansion on fire, hoping to destroy all evidence. Believing he has been successful in killing his wife and four children he escapes.
Jenna Morgan is the detective who has been called in to try and solve the mystery of the tragic family and locate Lawrence. When it becomes apparent that one of his victims, his daughter Poppy, has escaped the scene alive, the story becomes a race to see who will reach her first – her father, intent on finishing what he started or Jenna.
For the most part the story moves along quickly and it kept up my interest. Towards the middle of the book there is another plot involving Jenna’s accidental investigation.
The author’s love of dogs is really apparent in the story which I thought was lovely.
My favourite characters were Mr and Mrs Crawford who are the Lawrences’ neighbours. Mrs Crawford in particular shines out for me. Jenna herself is a very believable character with many aspects to her personality apart from her role as a detective and I enjoyed learning about all the sides to her.
There are some gruesome descriptions which I love in a crime novel and I couldn’t wait to find out whether Poppy escapes her father.
What She Saw is a very entertaining book and I found it really engaging.
Diane Saxon previously wrote romantic fiction for the US market but has now turned to writing psychological crime. Find Her Alive was her first novel in this genre and introduced series character DS Jemma Morgan. She is married to a retired policeman and lives in Shropshire.
