Spotlight on #Quilt4Kindness with Crafter’s Companion and Project Linus UK

When I saw this awesome charity crafting project linking Crafter’s Companion and Project Linus UK, I knew I had to share it with you.  Even though sewing is not my forte, I know there are many of you who enjoy crafting with fabrics and may like to get involved in #Quilt4Kindness.

Project Linus UK #Quilt4Kindness

Project Linus is the brainchild of Karen Louks who, in 1995, saw a newspaper article showing how much a comfort blanket had helped a child cancer victim. She decided to organise blankets for her local children’s cancer unit and started spreading the word.  Friends told friends and soon it spread from State to State. With growth came the need to make it more formal and Charles Shultz, the creator of Peanuts cartoon strip, was asked if the organisation could be named after the character Linus who always carried a comfort blanket. He kindly agreed and thus Project Linus was born. Project Linus UK began in March 2000 as a result of a quilter’s visit to America where she learnt about the organisation and was inspired to set up a UK version back home.

Project Linus UK is a volunteer organisation and they have a large network of volunteers across the UK who donate their time and skills to create beautiful blankets and quilts. The aim is to provide a sense of security and comfort to sick and traumatised babies, children and teenagers through the provision of new home made patchwork quilts and knitted blankets, and give volunteers across the UK the opportunity to contribute to their local community. A Linus quilt is more symbolic than simply practical, they carry the message that someone cares.

Since its’ inception in the UK, Project Linus UK’s coordinators have delivered around 350,000 quilts throughout the British Isles and continue to deliver about 2,500 – 3,000 quilts and blankets to sick, disabled or disadvantaged children across the UK each month with over 4 million worldwide by all the Project Linus organisations.

So how does it work?

Once a volunteer has made a quilt they give it to their local coordinator (there are 130 around the country) who sews a label on the back and logs it in.  Each coordinator give the quilt a number, records who gave it to them and which organisation or institution has received the quilt.  In this way, when a letter of thanks is received from the recipient they know which volunteer they have to pass it onto.  The quilts are then taken to the children’s ward of hospitals, where they brighten up the clinical look of a hospital bed, women’s refuge, hospice, foster homes, homeless families, and those disadvantaged in other ways where they give comfort and a sense of security.

#Quilt4Kindness Crafter's Companion

Crafter’s Companion is helping to spread the word about Project Linus UK by featuring a *four-series long ‘Quilt-along’ within its magazine ‘Sew Inspired’.

Readers will be taught how to make a complete quilt throughout the year, inspiring and educating them in this traditional craft, then participants will be encouraged to donate their finished quilt to Project Linus UK.

Along with the quilt donation, Sew Inspired have also worked with sewing manufacturer Threaders to produce a *quilting starter kit, and they will be donating 10% of the sales to a number of children’s, elderly and homelessness charities and organisations.

Quilting Starter Kit #Quilt4Kindness

The kit includes

  • 45mm rotary cutter
  • A3 double-sided cutting mat
  • 6 x 12″ acrylic ruler

The versatile A3 double-sided cutting mat will prove to be a handy addition to many crafts as it features both metric and imperial measurements for your convenience – the soft grey background and white gridlines make it easy to measure your fabric with accuracy. Use the mat and rotary cutter together with the 6×12” acrylic ruler to ensure that your fabric pieces are the perfect size for your project. This ruler is a handy size, making it easy to manoeuvre around the cutting mat and store when not in use.
